Two colleges from Beijing and Macau reunite in Macau for Research and Study Camp, Exploring Sustainable Development Strategies
Members from the Tsinghua University Xiuzhong College visited Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) during 14th to 19th January. The delegation, led by Prof. Yue Dongbei, the Associate Master of the Xiuzhong College, participated in the “Harmonious Development of Urban and Historical Nature – Study Camp on Sustainable Development of Tourist Cities” organized by HFPJC. During the Study Camp, members from both colleges jointly explored the sustainable development strategies for Macau. HFPJC and Xiuzhong College signed a MOU last year and HFPJC was invited to visit the Xiuzhong College in December 2023. In return, Xiuzhong College participated in the Study Camp as an exchange activity with HFPJC.
At the Opening Ceremony, Prof. Mok Kai Meng, the Vice Rector of Student Affairs of UM and the Interim College Master of HFPJC, expressed gratitude for the warm reception by Xiuzhong College during our visit in December. He looked forward to more in-depth communication and collaboration between the two colleges in the future. HFPJC invited Prof. Jiang Chaoyang, the Director of Centre for Constitutional Law and Basic Law Studies, and Prof. Shao Chaoyang from Chinese Department of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities to deliver lectures on the “One Country, Two Systems in Macau” and “Macao Is Not Just a City” respectively. After the lectures, participants gained a profound knowledge on how the One Country, Two Systems principle has been successfully implemented since the Handover of Macau, and explored Macau’s unique role from a historical and cultural perspective. During the student leaders’ symposium, participants shared their experiences on the RC systems and the important role of student organizations in inspiring creative thinking and leadership experiences in RC community.
In addition, participants of the Study Camp visited Macau’s World Heritage sites for learning its historical background and culture, and participated in activities related to intangible cultural heritage, such as creating Portuguese tile paintings and dragon and lion dances. These experiences inspired members to reflect on the conservation measures and promotional strategies for the World Heritage urban area. Furthermore, they visited resort hotels to observe environmental initiatives and learn about the green energy and sustainable development projects. The group also visited Taipa and Coloane for more understanding on the ecological observations, revitalizing of old districts and how the city maintained its natural ecology and urban development. The participants gained more knowledge on the importance of balancing development between urban, historical, and natural elements through the field trips. They also explored ways to protect the ecological environment and preserve the historical and cultural heritage while promoting tourism development.
During the Closing Ceremony of the Study Camp, members from Xiuzhong College presented their research and ideas on various topics, including the conservation and promotion of Macau’s World Heritage historic district, sustainable development of resorts, revitalization projects for old districts, and nature conservation. This Study Camp not only deepened the participants’ understanding of Macau, it also enhance the friendship between the two colleges. This exchange experience inspired members’ creative thinking and strengthen their leadership skills. The Study Camp laid good foundation for future collaborations in areas such as academic management, innovative practice, cultural education, and sustainable development within the college system.
